It is the home of TV3’s news and current affairs programmes: 3 News, Campbell Live, Firstline, The Paul Henry Show and 3rd Degree and presents independent coverage of news and current affairs from around New Zealand and the world and provides up-to-the-minute news coverage and videos.
Goals
Create a mobile app for iPhone, Android and iPad to enable users to read the news and watch video while on the go.
Results
In early 2010, we took the brief and looked at potential of the app from ground up. We brainstormed ideas on what the app could deliver besides just being an obvious read only news and video device. We decided to tap into the enormous potential of crowd sourced content with a very simple and nifty feature that enabled users to send in photographs into the news room right through the app.
The results were astounding, users sent video and photos through in real time from disaster zones allowing the news station to broadcast news first as it happens. The feature even prompted 3News to brand it as ‘iWitness’ and it became an essential part of the news gathering process. It remains as one of NZ’s most downloaded apps.

Moa Creative have done a fantastic job of launching us onto the iPhone platform, understanding our detailed requirements, and enabling us to deliver an app whose popularity continues to suprise and delight us. During the Christchurch Earthquake coverage we were the number one iPhone news app downloaded from the NZ iTunes store, and our traffic has been consistently high ever since. We look forward to future projects and product enhancements with Moa, to launch our brands onto emerging platforms that push user engagement to the next level.”
